3.145.

न हि कश्चित्क्षणमपि जातु तिष्ठत्यकर्मकृत् ।

कार्यते ह्यवशः कर्म सर्वः प्रकृतिजैर्गुणैः ॥ ५ ॥ (3.5)

3.146. Because no one ever remains even for a moment without doing work. 1/2

3.147. For, all are made to work under the compulsion by the Gunas born of Prakrthi (Nature).2/2

3.148.

कर्मेन्द्रियाणि संयम्य य आस्ते मनसा स्मरन् ।

इन्द्रियार्थान्विमूढात्मा मिथ्याचारः स उच्यते ॥ ६ ॥  (3.6)

3.149. That deluded man is called a hypocrite who sits controlling the organs of actions, but dwelling in his mind on the objects of senses.

3.150

यस्त्विन्द्रियाणि मनसा नियम्यारभतेऽर्जुन ।

कर्मेन्द्रियैः कर्मयोगमसक्तः स विशिष्यते ॥ ७ ॥ (3.7)

3.151. Controlling the sense organs with the mind, he who commences the Yoga of action with the organs of action, unattached, is held to excel O Arjuna!

3.152. Such being the case,

नियतं कुरु कर्म त्वं कर्म ज्यायो ह्यकर्मणः ।

शरीरयात्रापि च ते न प्रसिध्येदकर्मणः ॥ ८ ॥  (3.8)

3.153. You perform the obligatory duties, for action is superior to inaction. Indeed even life in the body is impossible without working.

3.154. यच्च मन्यसे बन्धार्थत्वात् कर्म न कर्तव्यमिति तदप्यसत् । कथम् —

3.155. Also your notion that work makes for bondage and must not be done is wrong. How?

3.156.

यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः ।

तदर्थं कर्म कौन्तेय मुक्तसङ्गः समाचर ॥ ९ ॥ (3.9)

3.157. This world is bound by works other than those done as sacrifice, O son of Kunti! Free from attachment do work as a sacrifice.

3.158. ‘यज्ञो वै विष्णुः’ (तै. स. १-७-४) Sacrifice is indeed Vishnu (Tai.Sam 1.7.4) making sacrifice equal to Easwara.

3.159. Through non-sacrificial work this world is bound, proving such work a bondage but no bondage occurs through sacrificial work.

3.160 Also,

सहयज्ञाः प्रजाः सृष्ट्वा पुरोवाच प्रजापतिः ।

अनेन प्रसविष्यध्वमेष वोऽस्त्विष्टकामधुक् ॥ १० ॥ (3.10)

3.161. Having created beings in the days of yore, those beings who are associated with sacrifices, Prajapathi said: 1/2

3.162. “By this you multiply. Let this be your yeilder of the coveted objects of desire.” 2/2

3.163. एष यज्ञः वः युष्माकम् अस्तु भवतु इष्टकामधुक् इष्टान् अभिप्रेतान् कामान् फलविशेषान् दोग्धीति इष्टकामधुक् ॥ कथम् —

3.164. Let this sacrifice prove to be the cow that yields all that you seek, the specific fruits you seek. How?

3.165.

देवान्भावयतानेन ते देवा भावयन्तु वः ।

परस्परं भावयन्तः श्रेयः परमवाप्स्यथ ॥ ११ ॥ (3.11)

3.166. (By means of sacrifice) Cherish the Devas with this; and may those Devas cherish you. Thus cherishing one another you shall reap supreme good.

3.167.

इष्टान्भोगान्हि वो देवा दास्यन्ते यज्ञभाविताः ।

तैर्दत्तानप्रदायैभ्यो यो भुङ्क्ते स्तेन एव सः ॥ १२ ॥ (3.12)

3.168. The Devas nourished by the sacrifices will give you the enjoyment you seek. 1/2

3.169. Verily he is a thief who enjoys without giving back to the Devas a share of the gifts given by them. 2/2

3.170.

यज्ञशिष्टाशिनः सन्तो मुच्यन्ते सर्वकिल्बिषैः ।

भुञ्जते ते त्वघं पापा ये पचन्त्यात्मकारणात् ॥ १३ ॥ (3.13)

3.171. The good people who partake of the remnants of sacrifices, become freed from all sins. 1/2

3.172. Those unholy ones who cook for themselves, they verily suffer from sin. 2/2

3.173.  य एतदुपास्ते न स पाप्मनो व्यावर्तते मिश्रं ह्येतत् । (Br.U 1.5.2)

3.174. He who monopolizes this food is never free from evil; for this food is the general food.

3.175.

अन्नाद्भवन्ति भूतानि पर्जन्यादन्नसम्भवः ।

यज्ञाद्भवति पर्जन्यो यज्ञः कर्मसमुद्भवः ॥ १४ ॥

3.176. Living beings are born of food; food is produced by rain. Rain is due to sacrifice. Sacrifice is the offspring of work.

3.177. आदित्याज्जायते वृष्टिर्वृष्टेरन्नं ततः प्रजाः’ (Manu 3.76)

3.178. Food is produced by rain which is product of sacrifice. Oblation properly placed in the fire, goes up to the sun.

3.179. Rain is due to the sun, and food is due to rain. Of food are born living beings.

3.180.

कर्म ब्रह्मोद्भवं विद्धि ब्रह्माक्षरसमुद्भवम् ।

तस्मात्सर्वगतं ब्रह्म नित्यं यज्ञे प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥ १५ ॥  (3.15)

3.181. Know that this work is born of the Veda, and the Veda have the immutable Brahman as its source. 1/2

3.182. Therefore the all-pervading Veda is eternally rooted in sacrificial work. 2/2

3.183.

एवं प्रवर्तितं चक्रं नानुवर्तयतीह यः ।

अघायुरिन्द्रियारामो मोघं पार्थ स जीवति ॥ १६ ॥ (3.16)

3.184. He who does not follow on earth the wheel thus revolving, sinful of life and rejoicing in the senses, he, O Partha! lives in vain.

3.185. प्राक् आत्मज्ञाननिष्ठायोग्यताप्राप्तेः तादर्थ्येन कर्मयोगानुष्ठानम् अधिकृतेन अनात्मज्ञेन कर्तव्यमेवेत्येतत्

3.186. Before gaining competence to address oneself to the discipline of Self-knowledge, one who is ignorant of the Self 1/2

3.187. and called upon to work, must undertake the discipline of Karma Yoga. 2/2

3.188. Should everyone be undertaking the discipline of Karma Yoga then?

3.189.

यस्त्वात्मरतिरेव स्यादात्मतृप्तश्च मानवः ।

आत्मन्येव च सन्तुष्टस्तस्य कार्यं न विद्यते ॥ १७ ॥ (3.17)

3.190. But the man who rejoices in the Self, is satisfied with the Self and is centered in the Self there is no duty to perform.
