The Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday conducted raids at self-styled godman Nithyananda’s Madurai ashram following allegations that he had tiger skins and elephant tusks there. A team led by Police Inspector Kathirvel searched the ashram following court orders.
MSolai Kannan, president of the Hindu Makkal Katchi, Madurai had filed a petition in the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court alleging that during his visit to the ashram, he saw Nithyananda sitting on a tiger skin and using elephant tusks. Police sources said that they did not find any tiger skin or elephant tusks during the raid on Tuesday.
In 2010, Nithyananda was accused of rape and molestation by some his inmates. The ancient mutt in Madurai has been caught in the eye of a storm ever since Nithyananda shifted his activities from his Bidadi ashram near Bangalore to Madurai on April 27, 2012 after he was made junior pontiff of the mutt. He was arrested on June 13 after he appeared before a court to surrender in an assault case and was then slapped with a fresh case of disturbing peace in his neighbourhood.
