CHENNAI: In a midnight swoop, Income Tax officials raided the house of the in-laws of actor Chiranjeevi’s elder daughter at Poes Garden on Friday, sources said. Official sources claimed that cash of Rs 35 crore was seized and subsequently six other places in the city were raided in connection with the case.
According to sources, a team of 12 IT officials raided the house of Chiranjeevi’s eldest daughter Susmita’s in-laws, located in Poes Garden, a posh locality where many VIPs reside. The raid began around 11.30 pm on Friday night and went on till early on Saturday morning.
Official sources said cartons containing cash, totaling Rs 35 crore, stacked up in a room, were seized, apart from many incriminating documents. The documents were being scrutinized while the cash was later taken to be deposited in the government account, they said.
Officials claimed the raids were conducted following a tip off that they had evaded tax. “We have been observing the money movement for some time,” a senior IT official said.
IT sources said they had prepared for the raid 48 hours in advance. When the IT sleuths walked in for the raid, some of the family members were away in the US; only a few people, including some servant maids were home.
Subsequently, their premises at six other places, including Chittarajan Street, Alwarpet, T Nagar, Anna Salai and Virugambakkam were raided.
