Boston, 26 July, (Asiantribune.com):
Speaking to Asian Tribune, Dr. Subramanian Swamy said ignore the utterances of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa. He also alleged that India’s Home Minister P. Chidambaram received a cut of Rs. 5000 crores in the 2G Spectrum Scam.

Dr. Subramanian Swamy

He said that Jayalalithaa was just indulging in her usual jingoism. Therefore, Sri Lanka should not take her seriously. He further pointed out that her utterances do not have any impact, and her comments will not make any difference to the centre.

Dr, Subramanian Swamy, the Janatha Party President was earlier the Minister of Commerce & Industry and also the Minister of Law & Justice in the Union Government of India. He was a Member of Rajya Sabah for the first time from 1974 to 1976 and later from 1988 to 1994 and also Member of Lok Sabah from 1977 to 1979, 1980 to 1984 and also from 1998 to 1999.

When asked about the Darusman report he said, “I don’t think very much of it, because they have found and have held both the Sri Lankan Army as well as the LTTE guilty of crimes.” He said that this report was lobbied for and got it done. “So this is just a report and nothing is going to come out of it.”

In the fight against terrorism, “we in India know that there is Manipur, Nagaland as well as Kashmir and what we have done there might have affected the civilian population, we are sorry about it, but nothing more we can do and this can’t be helped,” he quipped.

During the World War II, Dr. Subramanian Swamy recalled that the British bombed the entire city of Dresden in Germany and civilians died in that city and Americans dropped the atomic bomb in Japan and the entire Hiroshima and Nagasaki was devastated. It was done to bring the war to an end. “Therefore I don’t think too much of these reports and anything about accountability.”

Earlier in 1964, Dr. Subramanian Swamy joined the faculty of economics at Harvard University and from then on he has till date taught at the Department of Economics. Though he now does not teach full time at Harvard; however, he has been regularly teaching for a long time and also currently teaches economics courses in summer session at Harvard in the position of a full rank Professor.

When asked about Rahul Gandhi, Dr.Swamy said he is a unfit to be in any position of authority. ´He went on to allege that Rahul has been flunking in all his exams – in fact failed all exams in colleges and he has been actually detoxified many times for drugs and he has been friendly with so many women of different nationalities and said, “I don’t think he is a stable person.”

Regarding Sri Lanka, Dr Swamy was concerned only whether President Rajapaksa will bring about changes in the Constitution of Sri Lanka, so that there are some constitutional guarantees for devolution of power. That will be the key question in which his future would be decided in the history, he emphasized.

Given below the excerpts of the interview with Dr. Subramanian Swamy:

India Sri Lanka and China

Asian Tribune: I want to have your views on some very important subjects regarding Sri Lanka and India and the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Presently, there is a line of thinking that the bilateral relationship between India and Sri Lanka, since of late has strained after China has shown interest in the affairs of Sri Lanka. China for the last five years and more has come forward to support Sri Lanka economically and politically in all the international forums. I wish to have your comments on this?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: I think that India has to be very careful when its deals with other sovereign nations, because they may want to have relationship with many other countries too. I think that there is no difficulty for India to have an understanding with China on what is to be done in Sri Lanka. I myself have quite a lot of experience in dealing with the Chinese and they are practical people. Therefore, I think that Indian Government must see China positively, rather than treating China as a competitor in Sri Lanka. India has to try and treat China as a partner, as another fellow Asian nation, participating to solve the problems of Sri Lanka.

Asian Tribune: So do you expect that when Sri Lanka gives preference to China, will it not tilt the balance in the bilateral relationship with India?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: It might affect the balance, if in case Sri Lanka Government, when exercising its sovereign rights, gives them bases and tolerates military presence etc,.

Asian Tribune : In that case, do you think that India can take counter measures against Sri Lanka?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: It is no use just having strained relationship. We must make it very clear to Sri Lanka that if anything that adversely affect our national security and our preparedness and if you allow countries that would really threaten us, and then we will have to take counter measures. That would be a more practical way of dealing with other countries. You can’t be sullen or upset or have strained relationship. We have to be very frank with Sri Lanka and if you don’t agree, then we will have to take our own steps.

Jayalalithaa factor and the bilateral relations

Asian Tribune: You may be aware as Sri Lanka continued to have very good relationship with India and so far India has not come across any external threats emerging from the south?

But unfortunately, since of late, after J.Jayalaithaa has become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, she is bent on making provocative and anti-Sri Lankan statements, which is causing lot of concern. Her statements are uncalled for. She is just only a provincial state Chief Minister and the Central Government of India in the interest of the country’s national security has so far not come forward to caution her or advise her to desist from making such provocative statements against Sri Lanka?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: Ha .. Hah…ha. (Laughing loudly), I think the better thing is just ignoring what she says. She doesn’t have any clout with the Centre and on her own, she cannot take any steps. She is just doing the usual jingoism and they are all for the records and I think that Sri Lankan should not take her seriously.

Asian Tribune: Also Ms. Jayalalithaa has said that Rajapaksa should be brought under International Criminal Court and tried for crimes against humanity and for war crimes.

Dr. Subaramanian Swamy: Ha ..ha ..ha (Laughing). I will not take that seriously.

Asian Tribune : We are of the opinion that she is playing some form of bizarre politics to silence her junior partners and the Eelam groups in Tamil Nadu?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: I think that she is trying to put the blame on the DMK Chief Karunanidhi, as he did not defend the Tamils. I don’t think her utterances have to be taken seriously, as her utterances won’t have any impact with the Centre. Be assured that her comments will not make any difference with the centre.

Sri Lanka and the Devolution of Power

The real question is that the Sri Lankan Government has to look at is that there was an understanding once the LTTE issue was solved, then the Sri Lankan Government would take steps to devolve powers to see that the Tamils also have some form of political powers. For instance, as one calls it as a place in the constitution and then the devolved unit may have some freedom from the centre and that kind of federal, or semi federal or quasi-federal set up is what Sri Lanka would bring about. It would be the understanding and particularly we are very concerned and unhappy as Sri Lanka has so far not come forward to affect any devolution of powers, after all the support given to Sri Lanka in the war against the LTTE. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka as agreed has not implemented any steps regarding the devolution of power. We still positively await for it.

Darusman Report and Accountability

Asian Tribune : What do you think of the Darusman report that has been prepared on the request of the UN Secretary General?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: I don’t think very much of it, because they have found and have held both the Sri Lankan Army as well as the LTTE guilty of crimes. They have focused on Sri Lankan Government but the fact is that they have also said that the LTTE too was engaged in these atrocious acts. I think that this report, I will say, it was lobbied for and got it done. So such reports come out and in the end this is just a report and nothing is going to come out of it.

In the fight against terrorism we in India know that we have hot spots like Manipur, Nagaland as well as Kashmir and what we have done there might have affected the civilian population, we are sorry about it, but nothing more we can do and this can’t be helped.

When the World War II was going on the British bombed the entire city of Dresden
(In March 1945, the Nazi regime ordered its press to publish a death toll of 200,000 for the Dresden raids. Death toll estimates as high as 500,000 have been given. An independent investigation commissioned by the city council in 2010 reported a maximum of 25,000 victims) and all the civilians died in that city and furthermore American dropped the atomic bomb in Japan and the entire Hiroshima and Nagasaki was devastated. (The Hiroshima bomb, known as “Little Boy” – a reference to former President Roosevelt, contained the equivalent of between 12 and 15,000 tons of TNT and devastated an area of five square miles (13 square kilometres). More than 60% of the buildings in the city were destroyed.
Official Japanese figures at the time put the death toll at 118,661 civilians. But later estimates suggest the final toll was about 140,000, of Hiroshima’s 350,000 population, including military personnel and those who died later from radiation. Many have also suffered long-term sickness and disability.
Three days later, the United States launched a second, bigger atomic bomb against the city of Nagasaki. The device known as “Fat man”, after Winston Churchill, weighed nearly 4,050 kg (nearly 9,000lb).
Nagasaki is surrounded by mountains and because of this the level of destruction was confined to about 2.6 square miles or 6.7 square kilometres. Nearly 74,000 were killed and a similar number injured.
The two atomic bombs, with the Soviet declaration of war against Japan on 8 August 1945, finally left the Japanese no choice. )
It was done to bring the war to an end. Therefore I don’t think too much of these reports.

As far as I am concerned, I am only concerned whether Rajapaksa will bring changes in the Constitution of Sri Lanka so that there are some constitutional guarantees for devolution of power. That will be the key question in which his future would be decided in the History.

Asian Tribune: Also have you seen the documentary “Sri Lanka Killing Field, put out by Channel 4.

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: I don’t think too much about such media reports. Regarding these media reports, I like to go into the circumstances these media reports were prepared and how did they decide on the content. I have seen these kinds of reports about what has happened in India, I don’t take it seriously and I think Sri Lanka should not take it seriously.

About Rahul Gandhi

Asian Tribune: I have also read your comments about Rahul Gandhi – the king in waiting – future, political future.

Dr, Subramanian Swamy: I think he is a mentally deficient person and he is unfit to be in any position of authority. He has been flunking all his exams – in fact failed all exams in colleges. He has been actually detoxified many times for drugs and he has been pulling out with so many women of different nationalities and I don’t think he is a stable person.

2 G Spectrum Scam and Dayanidhi Maran

Asian Tribune: Regarding this 2 G Spectrum, what do you think of the CBI’s line of action?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: CBI is to report to the Supreme Court and this one is a major development because of my petition. Second is that in my opinion that CBI has already prepared sufficient materials to book and convict large number of people and we are at present just thinking of how it can be expanded to bring more people in this picture.

Asian Tribune: What do you think of the plight of this Dayanidhi Maran, the grand nephew of DMK patriarch M.Karunanidhi?

Dr. Subaramanian Swamy: Dayanidhi Maran is the man alleged to have forced Sivasankaran of Air Cell to sell to Anandakrishnan of Malaysia, who has been alleged to be an LTTE supporter. We think in any case, in telecom there should not be so many foreigners. Now we have got the Pakistanis. We got the Chinese through the Telenor and now we have the LTTE. I think what he has done; he has committed a crime – a crime against the nation through Anandakrishnan.

Asian Tribune: Do you think that he will be booked also?

Dr. Subaramanian Swamy: Of course, the process is on and I expect that within two weeks it might happen.

Asian Tribune: So you think Dayanidhi Maran will be summoned for inquiry and subsequently … what will happen to him?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: Yes, they will call him for an interrogation and if they find that he is not telling the truth, they might arrest him.

About Minister P.Chidamparam & 2 G Spectrum Scam

Asian Tribune: Yes.. What about the case of P. Chidamparam? You are also talking about him?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: Yes. Chidamparam must be indicted as he is deeply involved in this scam. Mr. A. Raja is in jail because he fixed the price at 1/10th of the market price saying that this is the price prevailed on 2001 and he is in jail for that. That caused the loss to the government. This was not a decision Mr. Raja took alone. This is a joint decision with Mr. Chidamparam.

On November, 2008, Subramanian Swamy wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and followed it up with four more letters seeking sanction to prosecute A. Raja in regard to 2G telecom Spectrum Scam. When the Prime Minister didn’t take any decision, Subramanian Swamy went to Supreme Court. On 27 November 2010, Subramanian Swamy announced that he will file a criminal case against former union minister A. Raja in the 2G Spectrum Scam before the Special Court for Corruption Cases in connection with the charges of irregularities in 2G spectrum allocation. The Supreme Court of India took Swamy’s complaints on record [With Case type:Writ Petition (Civil),Case No:10, Year:2011]. The Comptroller and Auditor-General’s report had put the presumptive loss to the government at Rs.1.75 lakh crore, but according to Dr. Swamy, the gratification shared would be only about Rs.60,000 crore.
Asian Tribune: How did Home Minister P. Chidambaram come into the picture?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: He came into the picture because the cabinet in 2001 decided that the price of Spectrum will be decided by two ministers jointly and one is the Finance Minister and other is the Telecom Minister. At that time Mr. Chidambaram was the Finance Minister.

Asian Tribune: Do you think Mr. Chidambaram had vested interest in fixing the price with Raja?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: I think he got Rs. Five thousand crores as a cut from Mr. Raja.
Asian Tribune: How can you substantiate that?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: I will substantiate it only in the Supreme Court and I don’t think other than that, I should substantiate to anyone else.

Asian Tribune: How can that be? You are making a highly defamatory statement and I think it is incumbent on your part to substantiate.

Dr. Subaramanian Swamy: So far I have been making many statements and I have been substantiating them in the courts. I think you have to trust my word for it.

Asian Tribune: I am asking this because you are to substantiate these allegations. Have you got anything such as either documents or witnesses to substantiate these allegations?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: Without evidence, I never talk.

Asian Tribune : I personally know that. That is the personal understanding about you I have. That is different. But it is our duty to enlighten our readers.

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: In fact, the Asian Tribune readers should know that Mr. Raja is in jail today because of me.

Asian Tribune: Yes we know that.

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: So obviously I know enough of that subject. I don’t have to present everyday to another court. I have to go before the Supreme Court of India. Therefore I can’t go before every tribunal. There is no People’s Court as such for me to go and substantiate my statements.

Asian Tribune : I am associated with you for a very long number of years and I personally know you well. I know that you always do your home work very well. In conclusion, I wish to ask you a last question. Do you propose to visit Sri Lanka?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: I was told by one of the high ranking Sri Lanka Government media officials that an invitation is on the way. When I receive such an invitation, I will be happy to visit Sri Lanka. First, the invitation must come. Whenever the Sri Lankan Government is ready to receive me, then I will be happy to come.

Asian Tribune: I think the Sri Lankan Government would take note of this interview. In case if the Sri Lankan Government feels that you are an anti-Sonia Gandhi person and in case by inviting you they might offend the feelings of Dr. Manmohan Singh, Ms. Sonia Gandhi and the ruling elite of the Indian Congress?

Dr. Subramanian Swamy: If your government entertain such views, then let them not invite me.

Asian Tribune: Thank you very much for your time.

Seema Mustafa V Subramanian Swamy

TUESDAY, JULY 19, 2011

Subramanian Swamy in his true insightful but provocative style has written an article in DNA July 14: ‘How to wipe out Islamic Terror’. Much of the article is on Islamic terrorism and how it threatens Hindus in India. In response Seema Mustafa, a noted journalist, has responded with another article in DNA July 19 titled ‘Dr Subramanian Swamy has inflamed passions through blatant falsehoods’. I have read only a few of Mustafa’s articles which have come across as good, sensible pieces of journalism. This particular piece of hers in response to Swamy stands out in some ways. Falsehoods she says. Okay, so before I come back to her article let’s try and understand what Swamy has said.

Swamy’s strongly worded article revolves around 5 goals that he attributes to the Islamists or the ‘unfinished’ Islamic business for India if you like. I believe these being central to his article would constitute the falsehoods that Seema Mustafa is talking about.

Goal 1 (Falsehood 1) : Overawe India on Kashmir.
I need not go into the history of Pak-funding of militants, frequent incursions, Kargil war and all that. They never happened. Lakhs of Hindu Pandits displaced violently from their homes and are refugees in their own country. Falsehood, never happened. SmitaPrakash, another prominent journalist writes chillingly about how teenagers and youths were paid money in the stone pelting exercise. Oops, falsehood again! Geelani and company go around the country with inflammatory speeches. Falsehood! Again! Hoisting Pakistani flags at Lal Chowk on Republic Day. Falsehood, never happened. There you go, Mustafa disproves Swamy’s goal no.1

Goal 2 (Falsehood 2): Blast temples, kill Hindu devotees.
Blasts at Varanasi this year. Oops, that wasn’t a temple, that was some Sulabh Sauchalay. Daring attack on Akshardham in Gandhinagar (Gujarat) in 2002. Again Akshardham is hardly a Hindu temple. Sai Baba temple blast in 2002. Misreported. Sankat Mochan temple blast. What a lie! All these are falsehoods because Muslims and Christians may have died in these temple blasts too. There might be more and I guess all of those are falsehoods too. Mustafa exposes Swamy’s lie on this one too.

Goal 3 (Falsehood 3): Turn India into Darul Islam.
That’s a blatant lie by Swamy. This statement by the Imam Bukhari of Delhi was falsely reported by media all over. “We were rulers here for 800 years. Inshaallah, we shall return to powerhere once again”” and threatens “this country is in for another partition,so let us be prepared for nation- wide riots and violence. ” I would recommend readers to go through the post ‘Life,Liberty and the pursuit of Sharia’. Swamy is a liar. It is not just India, this particular falsehood is for the whole world and not just India. Mustafa, once again, brilliantly exposes the falsehood.

Goal 4 (Falsehood 4): Change India’s demography by illegal immigration, conversion, and refusal to adopt family planning.
Read my post ‘Make Mumbai aseparate state’. There isn’t still a handle on the number of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan or other places in Mumbai, Assam, Bengal and other places. The vote-bank hugging ‘secular’ government simply loves this. And when was the last time you ever heard of population control, family planning etc.? Those terms died in the late seventies. Mustafa doesn’t have much to say on this so her silence proves it to be an absolute falsehood. Bravo!

Goal 5 (Falsehood5): Denigrate Hinduism through vulgar writings and preaching in mosques, madrassas, and churches to create loss of self-respect amongst Hindus and make them fit for capitulation.
Well, I suppose at all mosques and madrasas they are only preaching love for humanity. I guess the FBI in the USA is stupid to be keeping a close vigil on all major mosques. The UK does it now too. Some mosques in Germany have even been shut down. It is only in India that Swamy is stupid to peddle this lie. Once again Seema Mustafa has nothing to say on this. So once again her silence on this proves it to be a falsehood. We would never get to know what goes on in mosques and madrasas because our ‘secular’ government considers that too important a sentiment to offend.

So now that Seema Mustafa has clearly established the falsehoods in Swamy’s article let’s see what she actually had to say in her piece. Much or almost all of her article is an ad hominem attack on Swamy and is basically an opinion piece. It neither confronts the basic premise of Swamy’s central arguments nor does it offer a solid, logical and factual rebuttal of his contentions. Needless to mention, Swamy’s article also contains quite a bit of his opinions and his solutions to the goals are basically his opinions, some of which are also impractical. But a response basically requires disproving the theories stated in an article. To that end, Swamy’s article contains nothing but commonly known facts which he outlines in the 5 goals. None of that is a big secret to anyone, anywhere in the world.

“Swamy’s article has drawn absolutely excellent responses from the people of this country, mostly non-Muslims, to put him and his exhortations in their place” says Seema. Oh yeah? How do you know? Did you carry out a survey? Did you research all the respondents in all forms of media? This is the typical defence of the secularist. Everyone says so, so it must be balderdash. Since when is that childish logic the foundation of mature debate?

“The Hindus, he keeps insisting, are the targets. But when blasts take place in crowded market places in Mumbai or any other part of India, the targets are the people of India, Dr Swamy. Hindus and Muslims and Sikhs and Christians and Parsis and Jains and Brahmins and Dalits and all those who are at the spot die because the bomb cannot differentiate among religions and castes. India, as we have grown up to understand it, is a secular, democratic country belonging to all who are its citizens” writes Mustafa. First note how cleverly and significantly she segregates Hindus, Brahmins, Dalits as three distinct entities. Isn’t that a common secular strategy? That’s the first line of attack of secularists. Separate Hindus into different groups.Wouldn’t it be funny to suggest bombs kill Shias, Sunnis, Protestants and Catholics? Well, only in case of Hindus the bombs know the segregation I suppose..

There is a saying in Goa: “If you throw a stone it will invariably land on a bar”. But, of course, there is a tiny chance it can also land on a church. Same is true for people dying from bomb blasts I suppose. The bombs aimed a Hindus invariably land on other religious groups.

Yeah, bombs don’t know who they kill – brilliant. I don’t walk backwards ‘cuz I don’t have eyes in my ass! But those who plant bombs do know who their intended target is. I suppose those who planted bombs at Zaveri Bazar didn’t know there might be Muslims and Christians in the area. Of course, they also didn’t know that bazar is a predominantly Hindu and Jain bazar or a majority are Gujaratis. Of course, secularists conveniently forget that people have been dragged out of buses in Kashmir, Hindus have been sorted out and lined up separately and killed. So when terrorists have the opportunity they would indeed choose their specific targets. It’s only when it is not possible or inevitable that some collateral damage has to be accepted. How intelligent would it be to suggest that the 9/11 attack wasn’t Islamic terror because Muslims also died in those towers? Yeah, sure, we are so convinced of this line being churned out by politicians, now we have to be reminded repeatedly by journalists, that’s all.

Does anyone remember the Israeli raid on Entebbe airport in 1976. An Air-France airline was hijacked by terrorists and landed at Entebbe airport in Uganda. The terrorists allowed all to go except Jews. Does that explain that when the chance is available terrorists do choose who they wish to target or kill? I can believe politicians can make silly statements but can’t believe journalists too expect people to be so naïve.

Seema suggests Swamy may even face charges of hate speech or some law-violation. Well, I suppose he has no right to air his views some of which are based on facts but the likes of Digvijay Singh delight our secularists. I have yet to see one really strong piece in any major media outlet that questions the utterances of that man. Never mind that either. Let’s see some more brilliance from Mustafa.

“It (India) is home to all religions, and it is a vibrant democracy that thrives on plurality and diversity. The terrorists, al-Qaeda, Lashkar or the Aseemanands…” Hahahhaha! That really takes the cake! You win Seema! Aseemanand, whose arrest is full of controversy and still not convicted of anything, is sweepingly bracketed with Al-qaeeda and LeT. So fools like me finally realise now, through the wisdom of the likes of Seema Mustafa, that Aseemanand is as big a threat to India and Hindus as are Al-Qaeeda and LeT. I guess that is what RG meant by 99% terror stopped!

There, the falsehoods of Subramanian Swamy stand thoroughly exposed. On behalf of Seema Mustafa should I say, ‘QED’?

Attend Gita classes or leave India: Minister

BANGALORE: A circular issued by the Karnataka government has asked teachers to set aside three hours a week for classes on the Bhagwad Gita, which hasn’t gone down well with the 8,600 minority schools in the State. Education Minister Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri said that any protestors against the Gita classes should leave the country.

“Only those who want to promote religious ideologies of foreign countries are protesting the Bhagwad Gita classes. If they want to promote their ideologies, they have no place in this country. They should leave,” Kageri said. The minority schools petitioned to the Governor on Tuesday to Kageri from his post.Minorities Institutions’ Federation Chairman C R Mohammed Imtiaz said, “It’s unconstitutional. It’s a breach of the oath he’s taken. We’ve asked the governor to dismiss him.”The Karnataka government now says that the Gita classes are not compulsory for all schools to implement.State Govt spokesperson S Prakash said, “Some motivated people are trying to create a controversy… It’s not a government programme. It’s a programme by a private mutt. The government has only said to make it available one hour for.”The issue is not whether learning the Gita is compulsory or voluntary, the issue is school hours and school resources are being used to teach a particular religion and that’s being seen as an attempt at saffronisation.”Tomorrow someone will want to teach the Quran and the Bible. If religious books are for studying in school, what’s the fate of students? Let Kageri make special arrangements to teach the Gita in temples and mutts. We’re also proud of our religion,” said CR Mohammed Imtiaz. However, The BJP has come out strongly in support for the implementation of the Gita classes saying that it is just moral education that will be taught to the students.BJP Spokesperson S Prakash said, “When you want to teach moral education to students, you shouldn’t think of it as waste of resources. Schools are not spending any money. The mutt is organising it. There is nothing wrong in it.”Whether it is right or wrong will be decided by the High Court soon which will take up the case from Thursday onwards.– Deepa Balakrishnan

Comments:

Bhagavad Gita, BG, is a master-piece guide for day-to-day life, not simply a spiritual book. BG classes should be made compulsory in all educational institutions across the nation and be read by all. Was Mahatma Gandhi communal, who carried BG all time and found guidance and solace in It? Just for few fanatic muslims, we can’t give up our ethical spiritual sastra BG. BG is an Universal book read even by most westerners, Its teaching creates righteous thinking personbality. Koran and Bible are secterian books, whose breeds fanatics. Morever, if muslim-christian run institutions can teach their religious books, Hindus have every right to teach theirs. Those institutions are beyond so-called minority are Hindu (all Bharatiya dharmic religions Hindu, Sikh, Buddia. Jaina) institutes.

Jayas land grab cells open Pandoras box

July 19, 2011 1:05:44 AM

Swati Das | Chennai

The newly-elected Tamil Nadu Government’s move to set up Land Grabbing Cells in the State seems to have opened Pandora’s box. As complaints pour in against the DMK functionaries, their support groups and real estate agents, an alarming picture of land frauds during the previous Karunanidhi Government is coming to light.

This was the tenure, during 2004-05, when real estate prices went up almost by four to five times and maximum use of forged documents and impersonations took place in order grab lands. Land grab victims, who had then lost faith in the DMK regime, are now coming out in hordes with their complaints along with evidence.

The announcement by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa that the cells would be opened all over the State to take complaints against land grabbing is part of her poll plank. Most of the cases have come from Salem, where the fiefdom of former DMK Minister, Veerapandi S Arumugam, has not only been a problem for the people living in the region but also to the former Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi. The other key region from where complaints are coming is Karunanidhi’s son and Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister, MK Alagiri’s, fiefdom — Madurai region.

When the decision to set up these cells was announced, Karunanidhi protested saying that the cells should look into all cases of land grabbing and not just take up cases against DMK men. He also promised legal assistance from the party to fight the “false” cases. Terming the announcement as “unleashing of terror”, he made clear that those who have committed the crime must be punished. It is being seen as his way of targetting Arumugam and reprimanding Alagiri.

The key fraud cases revolve around Angammal Colony in Salem where Arumugam and his family calls the shots. The issue first hogged the limelight in 2008 when 70 families of the colony near the city’s New Bus Stand were evicted by DMK men led by Arumugam’s nephew, Suresh Kumar (also implicated in a murder case of six members of a family and land grab cases last year), and their houses were razed. Residents claimed that the land was allotted to them by a popular jeweller of the city 50 years ago.

A petition in the Madras High Court led to a magisterial inquiry on July 17, 2008. Revenue divisional officer Bala Gurumoorthy concluded that Kousik Bhoopathy, personal assistant of Arumugam, had the power of attorney over the property. Now, the residents have disputed the claim and are taking it up. Arumugam’s name also figures in the complaint.

A case was filed against Arumugam’s son and former MLA A Rajendran alias A Raja alleging land grab but the complainant withdrew the plea. Yet another case was registered and Raja sought bail, which was denied.

From Alagiri’s side his close associate G Thalapathy has been charged with land grabbing in Madurai and his henchman, ‘Attack’ Pandi, was arrested last week on charges of land grabbing, cheating, forgery and other criminal activities.

In Coimbatore DMK functionary, M Siva alias Meenkadai Siva along with the district panchayat vice-chairman E Anandan were also arrested. In Ranipet (Vellore district), Municipal Council Chairman Krishnamoorthy was arrested for fraud in a public sector bank, while former MLA KP Ramasamy was charged of grabbing seven acres of land.

In Kodaikanal, Municipal Chairman Mohammad Ibrahim was arrested recently for grabbing land worth Rs 30 crore. In Vellore district, a former MLA’s son has been accused of land grabbing, while a Tiruvannamalai couple has slapped land grabbing complaints against another former DMK MLA R Sivanandam, and his sons Lokesh and Babu.

According to police records based on the complaints filed at the land grabbing cells, most victims are widows, senior citizens, farmers and NRIs. Even temple lands coming under the government have not been spared. It has been reported that many victims are now getting back their money following complaints lodged at the Land Grabbing Cells.

In the list of perpetrators, many real estate agents – even small-timers – have been arrested with fraud charges. Any land or property lying idle was targeted by the agents, who forged papers and hired people to impersonate owners in order to sell properties. In case of vulnerable owners, forged documents were used. Cases of buying land at a much less cost were rampant in Chennai and if complaints were lodged by the victims, intimidation (mostly by political bigwigs) was used to scare the victims.

Land grab scams: The stink reaches DMK biggie

TIRUCHY: The stench of land and property grab scams has reached the higher echelons of the DMK with a businessmen from Namakkal on Monday alleging DMK strongman K N Nehru’s hand in evicting him out of his property. The complainant, Dr K Kathirvel, claimed to have documentary evidence to prove the former minister’s link to his case.

Addressing the media after lodging a complaint with the Commissioner of Police here, he said five persons including Nehru, his brother, Ramajayam, and Deputy Mayor M Anbalagan, forced him to part with his hotel valued at Rs 15 crore. While reportedly purchasing Hotel Kanjana Towers in December 2005, Kathirvel had drawn up an agreement on its purchase with partners Guru Sankara Narayanan, Gayathri Devi, Subbu Lakshmni and Natchiyar. A total of Rs 65 lakh was handed over to the owners, and the balance payment was to be settled through monthly instalments, in addition to closing a bank loan of Rs 6 crore.“To start the hotel business, I spent Rs 1.5 crore to renovate the building, and it did well after the revamp,” Kathirvel said. However, in 2007, a group of men, with the support of then Inspector of police, Cantonment, Swaminathan, asked him to vacate the hotel claiming that the owners had sealed the deal with one Ranganathan before Kathirvel came into the picture.“Thereafter, I was often threatened of dire consequences by former minister Nehru and his brother, Ramajayam, to hand over the property to the Ranganathan group,” alleged Kathirvel.Subsequently, he lodged a complaint with then Cantonment police inspector Swaminathan against the duo on December 22, 2007. But the police sat on his complaint.“The day after I filed the complaint, a gang of about 100 men with lethal weapons, led by Deputy Mayor M Anbalagan and Ranganathan, entered the hotel and assaulted me. They also forcibly evicted me out of the hotel and took it under their possession,” he said.He also claimed that the former minister had directed the police to register a case against him on the ground that the businessman had threatened the owners and usurped their hotel.“A case was registered against me and they arranged a publication of a news report that the police were searching for a Namakkal doctor,” he said. He went on to add that the change of guard in the State had emboldened him to file a fresh complaint.Police Commissioner E Ma Masanamuthu has ordered a probe.
